Australia 1953 Coronation

Australia is in the southern hemisphere, surrounded by Indian Ocean and the Pacific. Australia has been inhabited for at least 40,000 years before being discovered by Dutch explorers in 1606. The eastern half was claimed by Great Britain in 1770 which established the penal colony of New South Wales. The population grew steadily in subsequent decades, the continent was explored and five self-governing Crown Colonies were established. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies federated, forming the Commonwealth of Australia.
