Germany - Winter Relief

The Winterhilfswerk des Deutschen Volkes (Winter Relief of the German people) was an annual drive by the Nationalsozialistische Volkswohlfahrt (National Socialist People’s Welfare Organization) to help finance charitable work. Its slogan was "None shall starve or freeze". The drive was originally set up under the government of Heinrich Brüning in 1931, though Hitler would later claim sole credit. It ran from 1933–1945 during the months of October through March, and was designed to provide food, clothing, coal, and other items to less fortunate Germans during the inclement months.

Germany - 1930 evacuation of the Rhineland

The Allied occupation of the Rhineland was a consequence of the First World War, in which the German Reich had suffered a military defeat against the allies and associated powers. Already in the Compiègne armistice of 11 November 1918, the presence of troops of the winning powers was agreed in the Rhineland and the Saar. The 1919 Treaty of Versailles reiterated these provisions, but limited the presence of foreign troops to 15 years. The purpose of the occupation was, on the one hand, to provide France with security against a renewed German attack and, on the other, to have a guarantee for the German repair obligations to be carried out. After this was apparently reached with the Youth Plan, the occupation of the Rhineland was terminated prematurely on June 30, 1930.

Germany - 1939 Danzig's Annexation

Germany - 1939 Danzig's Annexation

In October 1938, the German régime began urging Danzig's cession to Germany. On 1 Sept, 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland, initiating World War II. The Nazi regime killed the Polish postmen who defended the Polish Post Office: this was one of the first war crimes of the Second World War. On 2 September Germany annexed the Free City of Danzig, although only on 17 September the occupation became complete.
The German Post Office issued these two stamps on September 18, 1939, to commemorate the event.
