The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, commonly abbreviated as the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM acronym), or even simply Order of Malta, is a religious order of chivalry with charitable purposes. It is recognized by most of the international community as a subject of international law, although now without the requirement of territoriality and has the status of permanent observer at the United Nations. Its sovereignty is also expressed in the issuance of passports, license plates, stamps, and coins. It carries out medical and humanitarian activities in over 120 countries around the world and has diplomatic relations with 104 countries.
