In October 1938, the German régime began urging Danzig's cession to Germany. On 1 Sept, 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland, initiating World War II. The Nazi regime killed the Polish postmen who defended the Polish Post Office: this was one of the first war crimes of the Second World War. On 2 September Germany annexed the Free City of Danzig, although only on 17 September the occupation became complete.
The German Post Office issued these two stamps on September 18, 1939, to commemorate the event.
