The State of the Vatican City is the smallest independent state in the world, headed by the Pope of the Catholic Church. The territory of the State of Vatican City is an enclave of the territory of the Italian Republic, being inserted into the urban fabric of the city of Rome itself. Vatican City was established as an independent state in 1929 with the Lateran Treaty as a new creation, not as a residue of the larger Papal States (756-1870), which previously encompassed much of central Italy.
