In Middle Ages, it was an important center of the East Slavic culture, with the powerful state of Kievan Rus' that form the basis of Ukrainian identity. Later the territory was disputed, divided and Governed by a variety of powers, including Lithuania, Poland, the Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary and Russia. A Cossack republic prospered during the 17th and 18th century, but its territory was eventually divided between Poland and the Russian Empire, and then completely submerged in Russia.
