Tangier is a city in northern Morocco, at the western entrance of the Strait of Gibraltar. Tangier was made an international zone in 1923 under the joint administration of France, Spain and Great Britain in an international convention signed in Paris. The governments of Italy, Portugal and Belgium adhered to the convention in 1928, and the government of the Netherlands in 1929. Tangier joined with the rest of Morocco following the restoration of full sovereignty in 1956.
