Senegal is a country in West Africa, with traces of human presence dating back to the Paleolithic Age. The Senegalese territory was affected by the prolonged European colonial rule (French, Dutch, English and Portuguese), which began in the fifteenth century and in the nineteenth accentuated when it began to affect also the inland areas of the country. The Republic of Senegal became independent from France in 1960, first in union with Mali, later as an independent state.
