A group of islands in the west Pacific Ocean, including a part of New Guinea and adjacent islands of the Bismarck Archipelago. German Protectorate. The islands were occupied by Australian troops during World War I and renamed “New Britain.” By covenant of the League of Nations they were made a mandated territory of Australia in 1920. The old name of “New Guinea" has since been restored.
