The Bulgarians, an ancient tribe of Central Asia, has merged with the local Slavic population in the late seventh century to form the first Bulgarian state. In the following centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire and the end of the fourteenth century, the country was invaded by the Ottoman Empire. Bulgaria regained its independence in 1878 as an autonomous principality and was proclaimed an independent kingdom in 1908.
