The Netherlands Indies were the colonial possessions of the Netherlands in Asia and included the islands of Java, Sumatra, part of Borneo, the Moluccas, Celebes, western New Guinea and other smaller islands in the Indonesian archipelago. The Dutch government granted independence to the Dutch East Indies in 1949, which took the name of Indonesia, except for the western part of New Guinea
