Island in the South Pacific Ocean, east of Queensland, Australia. Dependencies of New Caledonia are the Loyalty Islands, Isle of Pines, Huon Islands, and Chesterfield Islands. Contention between Britain and France during the first half of the nineteenth century, the island became a French possession in 1853. A referendum on independence will be held by 2018
