Northern Europe, occupying the eastern half of the Scandinavian Peninsula. Sweden emerged as an independent and unified country during the Middle Ages and in the 17th century the Swedish Empire grew to be one of the great powers of Europe. The eastern half of Sweden, present-day Finland, was lost to Russia in 1809. The last war in which Sweden was directly involved was in 1814, since then it has become a neutral country.

The Universal Postal Union is a specialized agency of the United Nations that coordinates postal policies among member countries, in addition to the worldwide postal system. Before the establishment of the UPU, each country had to prepare a separate treaty with other nations that post had wanted to bring international mail to and from. The UPU was created in 1874.
