New Zealand is an island country in Oceania, place the South Pacific Ocean. The first Europeans to visit the islands were the Dutch in 1642. Since 1840 substantial waves of European settlers arrived in New Zealand and, in 1854, was installed the first New Zealand parliament. In 1893 New Zealand was distinguished as the first country in the world to recognize the right of women to vote. In 1907 the New Zealand acquired the status of dominion, then became fully independent in 1947.
1960 - Westland Centennial
The year 1860 saw the transfer of Westland to the British. To coastal Maori were offered 300 gold sovereigns Maori in exchange for their land - with the condition that certain lands should be set aside as a reserve natives. The offer was accepted May 21, 1860 and the agreement was signed. The stamps recognised the first explorers, miners and women of the region.
