Zanzibar is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 25-50 km off the coast of the mainland, and consists of numerous small islands and two large. The archipelago was inhabited since prehistoric times. At the end of the fifteenth century the Portuguese imposed its military dominance. Gradually were driven out at the end of the seventeenth century by the Sultan of Oman, which, in 1890, was followed by the British, who made it a protectorate. In 1963 the United Kingdom granted independence to the Sultanate, which became a republic the following year.
