The British Virgin Islands are an overseas territory of the United Kingdom and form part of the archipelago of the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean Sea. Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, were claimed by British, Dutch, French, Spanish and Danish, becoming a base note of piracy. The British Virgin Islands was one of the presidencies of the former colony of the Leeward Islands until they became a separate colony in 1960 which was followed, in 1967, the achievement of autonomy
