The Kingdom of Dahomey was an African kingdom that lasted from 1600 to 1900. For much of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the kingdom of Dahomey became one of the key points for the atlantic slave trade. In 1894 the kingdom was colonized by France and integrated as part of West Africa in the French territory of French Dahomey. In 1960 the country gained its independence as the Republic of Dahomey, which in 1975 became known as Benin.
