The Romans conquered the region in 64 BC and, for some seven centuries, made it a thriving center of international trade. In the seventh century Syria was conquered by the Arabs. The country was involved in the Crusades, and was invaded by the Mongols. Between 1517 and 1920 was part of the Ottoman Empire, from 1920 and 1946, Syria had to submit to a French Mandate. Independence was recognized as of January 1, 1946.
