Venezuela is located in the north of South America. Christopher Columbus discovered the region in 1498 and Spain incorporated Venezuela in his vast American empire during the sixteenth century. It was the first country in Latin America to emancipate themselves from the Spanish Crown and proclaim its independence in 1811.
