Serbia is a country located at the crossroads of Central and Southeastern Europe, landlocked. Following their settlement in the Balkans, Serbs established several states in the early Middle Ages. By the mid-16th century, the entire territory of modern Serbia was annexed to the Ottoman Empire. As a result of disastrous accidents in the First World War, and the subsequent reunification of CrownLand Habsburg Vojvodina and Syrmia with Serbia, the country co-founded the former Yugoslavia with other South Slavic peoples, which exist in several formations up until 2006.
