Southeastern Europe. In 1102 it was annexed to the kingdom of Hungary and in 1603 became part of the Habsburg Empire. At the end of World War I it became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later called the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In 1941 it became a nominally independent state and, in 1945, the country became a member of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. In 1991, Croatia was proclaimed an independent state.
