New Zealand is an island country in Oceania, place the South Pacific Ocean. The first Europeans to visit the islands were the Dutch in 1642. Since 1840 substantial waves of European settlers arrived in New Zealand and, in 1854, was installed the first New Zealand parliament. In 1893 New Zealand was distinguished as the first country in the world to recognize the right of women to vote. In 1907 the New Zealand acquired the status of dominion, then became fully independent in 1947.
