Southern Europe, bordering on the Adriatic Sea. Montenegro maintained a precarious independence from the Ottoman Turks during the 16th-19th centuries and in 1852 it became an independent principality. On 1918 was absorbed by Serbia to form the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and during World War II was an Italian satellite regime. After the war became one of the constituent republics of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to become later the Republic of Montenegro in 2006
