Germany is a country located in Central and Western Europe. It was inhabited by several Germanic peoples as early as 100 BC and formed the central part of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1949, after World War II, Germany was divided into two separate states - the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR - East Germany), who came back together in 1990.
Berlin, the capital of the German Empire in 1871, after the WW II was divided into four zones of occupation, and then divided into two concurrent parts, the three western sectors (West Berlin) and the Soviet sector (East Berlin). With the reunification of Germany Berlin is once again the capital of a united Germany.
