Ceylon - 1953 - Coronation

An island in the In Indian Ocean island separated from India by the Gulf of Manaar. It was occupied by the Portuguese in XVI century, followed by the Dutch in the seventeenth century. The island was ceded to the United Kingdom in 1796 and became a crown colony in 1802. Ceylon became independent in 1948 and changed its name to Republic of Sri Lanka in 1972.

On 2nd June 1953 Princess Elizabeth was crowned Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and Ceylon, thus assuming the role of Head of the Commonwealth. Elizabeth ascended to the throne of these countries following the death of his father, King George VI. During the coronation ceremony, Queen Elizabeth swore an oath to uphold the law in his kingdom and take over the government of the Church of England.
