Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. An empire until 1917, the government was overthrown in that year and a socialist union of republics was formed under the name of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. With the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, eleven former Soviet republics established the Commonwealth of Independent States.
